An Evening in NYC

My family made an impromptu weekend trip to NYC in July. It is no secret that I LOVE NEW YORK – the energy, culture, sounds and even some smells.

We had a packed schedule, but there is always room for ART in any itinerary. Choosing my favorite NYC museum is an impossible task, so I settled on visiting an old friend that I had not seen in a while – The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Friday evening at the Met is always a fun scene and that night was no exception – it was packed.

Here is a list of my highlights:

  1. Manus x Machina
The Costume Institute’s spring 2016 exhibition explores how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear – and this was my FAVORITE.With more than 170 ensembles dating from the early 20th century to the present, the exhibition addresses the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production. It explores this ongoing dichotomy, in which hand and machine are presented as discordant tools in the creative process, and questions the relationship and distinction between haute couture and ready-to-wear.
Here are some of the dresses I would love to have in my closet:

  2. Armor + Weapons
On the other side of the gender spectrum, here were my boys’ favorite outfits:

  3. Sharing Art with My Boys
My final highlight was bonding with my boys over some of my favorite artists and paintings. They have been going to museums their whole life and having them start to identify artists and ask questions about the works makes my heart swell with joy. Here are some of our favorites. Check out the fantastic Van Gogh Shoes(1888) painting. I must have missed it on past visits but it completely captured my heart this time.

Until next time, NYC!
